Deadbolt Lock Change and Rekey

Deadbolt Lock Change and Rekey

There are several ways in which deadbolts differ because there are several manufacturers of deadbolts and the earlier designs were somewhat different from those, which are used today, and the quality of these locks over time has changed considerably. One thing, which is mostly similar when it comes to deadbolts, is the fact that most of them employ 1-inch long bolts, which will in their extended position lock or dead bolt in place resulting in one of the most secure locking mechanisms. Any attempt to tamper with the bolt is certain to be completely ineffective if this system has been properly designed and correctly installed. There are also many options when it comes to deadbolts and they can be removed from the door and they can be taken to a locksmith, which should be able to easily rekey the cylinder. Many people who have chosen to replace there deadbolts, has found that the new holes necessary for that deadbolt often does not correspond with the holes which was used with the old deadbolt. This is exactly why rekeying is always the better option.

It’s a simple process

With the simpler deadbolt designs, it is mostly only necessary to remove two screws. People should remember that it is important to remove the deadbolt very slowly and to ensure that no parts are dropped. Many deadbolt make use of one-way screws but even these screws can be easily removed with the use of a chisel and hammer. Once they have been loosened sufficiently it is entirely possible to completely remove them with the use of pliers. It does happen occasionally that no screws are visible and therefore you might be using a deadbolt, which has hidden screws. There are several manufacturers that have manufactured deadbolts, which make use of hidden screws. The Arrow lock manufacturer require you to insert your key on the inside key cylinder and then turn one quarter to open the access holes before a person will be able to get to the screws. It will now be necessary to use a small star screwdriver to remove the screws.

Other manufacturers

There are deadbolt manufacturers such as Medeco that is making use of a cover plate to hide the screws. They have placed a very thin wire in a groove in the inside plate. If your deadbolt is a single cylinder system then it will be necessary to use a small Allen wrench to remove the screw, which is set in the thumbturn. Now proceed to remove the thumbturn and removed the thin wire from the groove with a knife or something similar and this should allow you to remove the brass plate. It should now be entirely possible to remove firstly the screws and then the entire lock. There is also the Lori locks which is very similar to mortise locks and once again, a different method is used to hide the screws. One or more of the cylinders is screwed into a housing and you will have to remove the faceplate of the bolt in order to get to the screws.
