What is Pin Tumbler Lock

What is Pin Tumbler Lock

One of the most well-known Yale lock designs is known as the cylinder pin tumbler lock. It is a well-known fact by historians that this design actually goes back to the ancient Egyptians. Archaeologists can confirm that some locks which incorporated puns was actually in use in ancient Egypt over 4000 years ago, the only difference is that those locks were considerably larger than the modern counterparts. Ancient Egyptian locks could have been anything from between 30 to 60 cm and they were manufactured from wood. Most people are not sure what a pin tumbler lock actually is. However, it is simply a lock mechanism, which has in tumbler pins of different lengths, which has been placed in such a way that it will prevent that lock from being opened unless the correct key is used. On closer inspection, it will be discovered that the casing of the pin tumbler has a cylindrical hole, which acts as the housing for the plug or the metal pin. The mechanism has been designed in such a way that pins of various lengths are used and their primary purpose is to prevent the lock from being opened unless the correct key is used.

The actual design

This is one of the most ingenious designs as far as locks is concerned and the pin tumbler design makes use of a main barrel which has been drilled in order to fit as many as five or six cylinder slots which is arranged closely together in a straight line. Furthermore a metal pin or tumbler is inserted into the walls of each of the slots while a second metal pin or what is also known as a driver is situated above the tumbler and it is also pressed down on to the tumbler by a very small coil spring. This spring is permanently under tension inside the lock’s enclosed case.

Linus Yale Jnr

The designer of this lock was Linus Yale Jnr but in fact, it was very close to a previous design by his father although the later design was so much smaller and the corresponding key used to have serrated edges just like the keys, which is used today. When such a key is inserted into a lock, it proceeds to push the bottom into the correct position, this then enables the key to be turned in the lock and in this way, the lock can be opened.
